Senior police officer allegedly slaps detained protester during Dalit protest in Meerut

The Indian Express reported that a purported 30-second video recorded during a protest in Meerut on 8 July 2026 appears to show police personnel slapping several protesters and striking a person inside a police van. The protest concerned demands for further arrests following the killing of a Dalit woman. Meerut Police alleged that protesters had obstructed traffic, attempted to enter government premises and attacked personnel, while the Senior Superintendent of Police said that police used the minimum necessary force.
